Doodle a Day?
I am thinking of creating and publishing a doodle a day for 2011. Anyone ever done this? Have any advice? What should I be taking into consideration before committing to such insanity?
I do mine in batches - when the urges come. Sometime, in one session, I will make a few, and other times, many. Making one each day does not work for me. I am not that disciplined. I do try to post at least one drawing every day.
I'm a little with Pixo, though there are times I get so busy and before you know, it's 11PM and i have to get that Splotch Monster up done and posted. If you can find the time, try a few at a time. On the same token, I find doing one a day is a good thing - perhaps truer to the original intent, which i assume would be exercising your creativity once a day.
Always a thrilling proposition that, especially for someone with your creativity.
I did it pre-blogging days from Aug '02 to Feb '03. The idea initially came to me when I read about artist On Kawara, who does paintings based solely on the day's date - apparently if he doesn't finish a work on the day he started it, then he destroys it.
I guess my output was flagging, and doodle a day seemed an interesting spur. In fact I was ecstatically excited by the notion to begin with. Ofcourse it was extremely variable, there were quickies and some utter crap, and sometimes I had to do more than one a day to catch up, which was a bit daft.(Hmm, if you go for it I might be tempted to try a parallel project, and see how long I can go! 8 years on would be a whole different scenario for me. Wish I'd kept it up for a year then.)
Are you prepared for bad days where you have to be satisfied maybe with something quick, minimal or uninspired. (Actually quick and/or minimal might be really good). Worth the risks I think for the rewards of regular spontaneous approaches to the task bringing forth unexpected wonders.
The risk of dull or difficult days actually make the prospect more exciting for me. It's embracing the unknown factor more than ever.. And by my quotient of commentage, you can see I'm thrilled that you might give this a go!
My experience was less bold, as I wasn't publishing as it happened, and by the time I did put some on my blog, I chucked out the weakest efforts.
