Colored Paper

Craving Tobiko ~ 8/26/10 ~ 8x11

Have you ever used a sketchbook with colored pages? I have been working in this one for over 5 years. What? Yeah. I don't pick it up that often because I feel like I have to fight with the brightness of the paper. Is that a challenge or just an annoyance? I hope to finish this sketchbook soon. I started in it in May of 2005. Whoa.

Rhodia Webbie Notebooks

Do you follow the blog Rhodia Drive? You should! I recently entered a contest on said blog to win a Rhodia webbie notebook. And guess what? I LOST! Boooooooo - Hiss.

Then something magical happened, Stephanie from the blog contacted me to see if I would like to review the notebooks and give one away. Did your ears just perk up?

So, yesterday I got two webbie notebooks in the mail. One for me and one for one of you.

There are a lot of similarities to the classic Moleskine sketchbook. I wonder, do the fine folks at Rhodia get tired of having their notebooks compared to the Moleskine? I have seen several comparison blog posts myself. The Moleskine is all I know as far as this type of sketchbook, so I have no other frame of reference. Working in a hard bound book is a relatively new experience for me, I am used to spiral bound books.

I think the Rhodia Webbie has some features that I like better than the Moleskine and I plan to tell you about those right now. Wrote a post about it, here it go:

First of all the outside of the Webbie feels nicer, it is soft and smooth feeling. I like that. It is however, very easy to mar the surface of the book. I was pulling back the elastic band and scraped the front of the book with my fingernail. I am kind of obsessive compulsive about such things so it initially bothered me, but I quickly got over it. I realized that it is just part of the process of the notebook, who knows what it will look like when I get it filled. It is bound to get some wear and tear after it has been shoved in and out of bags and toted around for a year.

I also like that the Webbie has black paper inside the front and back of the book. It sets the pages off in a nice way. I also like the texture of the black paper they use, it is thick and durable.

The black pages inside the front and back also means that the pocket in the back is black as well, nice!

The final great feature of the Webbie that I would like to mention is that the elastic band is tight! This makes me happy, as I have gotten some other sketchbooks in the past where the elastic band is loose which renders it completely ineffectual and makes me angry.

My biggest complaint about the Webbie? I don't know of any vendors in Reno. I guess I will have to scout around the next time I am in the bay area. Thanks Stephanie and Rhodia for introducing me to Something Different (see what I did there?).

I have started to work on my first pages in the book and will post them here when I finish.

So now, you want a Rhodia Webbie, don'tcha? Well, all you have to do to win one is leave a comment on this blog. I will pick a winner at random on August 18th. Be sure to leave me your contact information, if I don't know you. Good luck!
